Does Xoom have limits?
Yes. There’s a Xoom transfer limit on the amount of money you can send in a day, a month, or in a 6 month period. The Xoom maximum transfer amount also depends on your account level.
We’ll explore the Xoom bank transfer limit, and the Xoom cash pay out limits, in depth in this guide.
Is Xoom safe for large amounts?
Xoom is part of the PayPal group, a leader in secure payment processing. Xoom is safe to use as long as you apply normal common sense precautions and use your account within the Xoom user guidelines.
Xoom uses industry level security measures to keep customers and their money safe, such as secure encryption, and regular safety audits.
How much money can I send through Xoom?
As we’ve seen, the amount you can send in any given period of time depends on your Xoom account level. There are 3 Xoom account levels, with the lowest maximum limits set for level one accounts, rising to the highest available limits for level 3 accounts.
The amount you send may also be affected by the specific way you pay for your transfer, and how you want the recipient to receive the money in the end. For some account types, there are lower limits for the amount of money you can send for cash collection compared to other pay out options like bank deposit.
It’s also good to know that there are Xoom receiving limits, which vary based on the account tier of the sender and the aggregate amount you’re sent from all Xoom users over the course of a day, a month and a 6 month period.

Is it possible to increase Xoom transfer limits?
Yes. The highest limits from Xoom are offered to Level 3 account holders.
If you have a Level 1 or 2 account with Xoom you can increase your transfer limit by switching your account to a higher level.
How to increase Xoom transfer limits
If you start to arrange a payment which exceeds your Xoom account level maximum payment amount, you won’t be able to send it. Instead, if you have a level 1 or 2 account, you’ll be shown steps on screen to allow you to move your account to a higher tier. Xoom will communicate with you using secure messages through this process, and may also email you if you are required to give more information or documents.
Once you’ve provided the information needed, and submitted any documents requested, you’ll need to wait for Xoom to verify your details and change your account level. This may take a day or two, but you can reach out to the Xoom customer service team if you need any further support during that time.
Here’s the information and documents needed for each Xoom account level:
Xoom account level | Documents or information required |
---|---|
1 | Personal and contact information, as required in your profile |
2 | As level 1, plus your Social Security number or passport You may need to answer additional questions following prompts on the Xoom website |
3 | As level 2, plus:
You may need to answer additional questions through email, or by following prompts on the Xoom website |
How to send high amount transfers with Xoom
You arrange your Xoom payments online or in the Xoom app, by creating an account, getting verified if needed, and then entering the details of your payment. If you’re sending a smaller amount and only need a level 1 account, all you need is your personal and contact information. For higher amounts you may need to give more information or upload documents as we’ve seen. Verification may take a day or two, so be sure to give yourself time for this step if you’re sending a higher value payment with Xoom.
Once you have your account registered, you can send a payment with Xoom in the following way:
- Log into your Xoom account online or in the app
- Select the country and currency you’re sending to from the drop down box
- Enter the amount to send and select how you want the payment to be received
- Confirm how you want to pay, to see the final costs and received amount
- Follow prompts to enter the information required about the recipient
- Check everything over and confirm once you’re happy with the details
Required information and documents for Xoom transfers
Here’s the information needed when you send a Xoom payment to a bank account:
- Recipient’s bank name
- Recipient’s bank account number or IBAN
- Recipient’s bank BIC/SWIFT code
- Recipient’s name and phone number
- Recipient’s address may also be required
If you’re sending money for cash collection, you’ll need the recipient’s full name as shown on a government issued ID document. Once you’ve processed the payment you’re given a reference number.
The recipient will need to take the reference number and their ID to the collection point to get their cash. In some cases additional documents are required – this varies by country.
Xoom large transfer fees
Xoom transfer fees are variable and depend on a range of factors including the currency you’re sending to, the amount of the payment, and how the payment will be received in the end. You’ll be shown the transfer fee when you set up your transfer in the Xoom app or on the Xoom desktop site.
It’s good to know another couple of fees may apply – including an exchange rate markup which we’ll look at in a moment. Aside from this, you may be charged a cash advance fee if you pay by credit card – this is paid to your card network.
If you send to a bank account, the recipient’s own bank may charge a fee – again, this is not paid to Xoom, but can mean your recipient gets less than you expected in the end.
Xoom exchange rate for international transfers
Xoom states that their exchange rates include a spread. This is also known as a markup or margin. The spread is a fee which is built into the rate you’re quoted, and means that Xoom makes money on currency exchange as well as the transfer fee you’re quoted.
This is important because it’s not always easy to see the spread being used. You’ll need to compare the rate you get with Xoom against the mid-market rate which you can find on Google or using a currency conversion tool. The spread is a percentage fee added onto the mid-market rate.
Because it’s a percentage, it can mount up quickly when you send a higher value payment, or if you transfer frequently. Shop around for providers with the best available rate for the specific currency you’re sending, so you know you’re getting a good deal.
How long do large transfers take with Xoom?
Transfers to bank accounts with Xoom can take 2 to 3 business days to arrive – ultimately this depends on the country you’re sending money to and the recipient’s own bank.
If you’re sending money for cash collection this may be available more quickly – in just 30 minutes in some cases.
How to receive large transfers with Xoom
